National action program to combat desertification

Geography
Year
2003
Document Type
Policy

Summary

To put an end to the process of degradation and destruction of the country's natural potential, Algeria has undertaken large-scale action programmes to curb these phenomena. This strategy is based on the following key areas:

- Prevention to safeguard the existing heritage;

- Curative activities to regenerate and intensify this heritage.

This illustrates the importance Algeria attaches to combating desertification and protecting natural resources. Despite the considerable efforts made and the successes achieved, we have to acknowledge that desertification is unfortunately progressing in all regions of the world. But the fact remains that the success and sustainability of these actions are linked to the involvement of local populations and the improvement of their socio-economic conditions. It is this national action programme that Algeria is presenting to all its national and international partners.
