Pakistan's first National Water Policy emerges from a threat of imminent water crises in the country, and sets policy objectives and strategic priorities for 2018-2030. Among other things, the NWP envisions policies and practical efforts in the area of irrigated agriculture, drinking water and sanitation, urban water management and sustainable infrastructure. Many important goals also depend on cooperation with neighbouring countries for transboundary rivers. The federal government budget crucially sees an increase in the percentage investment in the water sector from 10% in 2018 to 20% by 2030. Further, the NWP is a national level policy offering guidelines to achieve targets. More detailed regulations for local water resources is entrusted to provincial governments.
