Action Plan REDD+ Ecuador "Forests for Good Living" (2016-2025)

The Action Plan REDD+ Ecuador "Forests for Good Living" (2016-2025) provides a comprehensive framework for implementing REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) in Ecuador. It aligns with international climate commitments under the UNFCCC while addressing national priorities for forest conservation, sustainable land use, and climate change mitigation. The plan reflects Ecuador’s rich biodiversity, diverse ecosystems, and cultural heritage, integrating these elements into a strategic approach to reduce deforestation and enhance carbon sequestration.
The plan is structured around three components: (i) a reference framework outlining forest dynamics and deforestation drivers; (ii) REDD+ objectives and implementation strategies in Ecuador; and (iii) specific actions for achieving forest conservation and sustainable management.
Key objectives include: (i) Mainstreaming climate change and REDD+ into national policies and territorial planning; (ii) Supporting a transition to sustainable and deforestation-free production systems; (iii) Enhancing sustainable forest management and non-timber forest products; (iv) Contributing to forest conservation and regeneration aligned with national development goals.
The plan sets ambitious targets, including a 20% reduction in gross emissions from deforestation by 2025 (compared to a 2000–2008 baseline) and a reduction in net deforestation rates. It prioritises social and environmental co-benefits such as biodiversity conservation, water regulation, soil retention, natural resource governance, and preserving ancestral cultural identities.

Policy instruments are techniques or tools used by governing authorities to promote certain policies in order to achieve predetermined goals. Put simply, instruments are how a government tries to achieve its goals, with this taxonomy being focused on national policy instruments.
