<p>Peru’s updated Director Plan for Protected Areas serves as the country’s ten-year national strategy for the management of the National System of Natural Protected Areas (SINANPE) and projects a vision to 2050. Structured around a renewed conceptual framework, strategic plan and set of policy guidelines, the document identifies 75 terrestrial and 36 marine priority sites to complete a representative, ecologically connected network that supports biodiversity conservation, climate-change mitigation and ecosystem-based adaptation. It aligns with the National Environment Policy (2030), the National Biodiversity Strategy (2050) and the National Climate Change Strategy (2050), embedding commitments to Peru’s NDCs through measures such as REDD⁺ projects, landscape-scale restoration, water-regulation initiatives and community-led nature-based solutions.Operationally, the Plan promotes integrated landscape governance that extends beyond protected-area boundaries, emphasising intercultural, gender and rights-based approaches and requiring collaboration among national agencies, regional and local governments, Indigenous peoples, civil society and the private sector. Key objectives for the 2025-2035 period include: reducing land- and water-use change, curbing deforestation, improving the status of threatened ecosystems and species, lessening pollution pressures, and strengthening institutional capacity and financing (including climate funds and the Fondo Verde). By coupling effective protection with climate resilience and sustainable livelihood opportunities, the Plan positions SINANPE as a cornerstone of Peru’s strategy to confront biodiversity loss, contribute measurable GHG reductions and safeguard ecosystem services critical to local and national development.</p>

Policy instruments are techniques or tools used by governing authorities to promote certain policies in order to achieve predetermined goals. Put simply, instruments are how a government tries to achieve its goals, with this taxonomy being focused on national policy instruments.

Slow onset events evolve gradually from incremental changes over many years or from increased frequency or intensity of recurring events. As defined in the Cancun Adaptation Framework (2010), slow onset events include risks and impacts from rising temperatures, desertification, biodiversity loss, land and forest degradation, glacial retreat, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and salinization.

Climate change can have a range of impacts on technological system. Extreme weather events can cause infrastructure failures like power outages or damage to roads and bridges, as well as the impacts from waste following natural disasters. Human activities also cause technological impacts, such as the risks posed by oil spillage and leaks.

Risks to the ecosystem health of the marine environment, including ocean warming, ocean acidification, and ocean deoxygenation, harming biodiversity, species health, ecosystem services, and coastal community livelihoods.

It also involves identifying and mitigating risks before they occur.

Geohazards are adverse geological phenomenon's that are capable of causing widespread damage or loss to property, life and the environment, such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions and tsunamis. Climate change can increase the frequency and severity of some geohazards, such as landslides, and soil erosion.
