This Strategy sets the stage across the country for job creation, economic growth, the advancement of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and close cooperation with Canada’s allies — in line with Canadian and international climate and nature protection objectives. The Strategy is meant to secure Canada’s advantage as the world’s supplier of choice for critical minerals and the clean technologies they enable, by further developing supply chains.
The Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy addresses five core objectives:
- supporting economic growth, competitiveness, and job creation;
- promoting climate action and environmental protection;
- advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples;
- fostering diverse and inclusive workforces and communities; and
- enhancing global security and partnerships with allies.
Under the second objective of promoting climate action and environmental protection, Canada seeks to advance "nature forward" approaches, which seek to incorporate practices that prevent biodiversity loss, protect species at risk and support nature protection. GHG emissions are reduced through the deployment of clean technologies and low-emission industrial processes, in line with Canada's Emissions Reduction Plan. In addition, waste is reduced, end-of-life products are reused, and their mineral content recycled by means of innovative technologies and processing techniques.
These objectives will be achieved by focusing on six areas of focus:
- driving research, innovation, and exploration;
- accelerating project development;
- building sustainable infrastructure;
- advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples;
- growing a diverse workforce and prosperous communities; and
- strengthening global leadership and security.
