Summary

The EU Gas Directive, part of the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market Package, was published alongside the Regulation on July 15, 2024, with EU countries having until mid-2026 to transpose the new rules into national law. The Directive updates rules on the EU natural gas market, facilitates the uptake of renewable and low-carbon gases, including hydrogen, while ensuring security of supply and affordability of energy for all EU citizens, and extends the scope of security of gas supply regulation to include renewable and low-carbon gases in the natural gas grid.
