Regulation (EU) 2024/1679 on guidelines for the development of the trans-European transport network

Regulation (EU) 2024/1679 establishes updated guidelines for developing the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), creating a strategic framework to connect Europe through efficient, sustainable, and resilient transport infrastructure. It divides the network into three layers — the core network to be completed by 2030, the extended core network by 2040, and the comprehensive network by 2050 — to ensure phased progress toward an integrated system. The regulation requires that all new and upgraded infrastructure support low- and zero-emission mobility, incorporate alternative fuels infrastructure in line with Regulation (EU) 2023/1804, and promotes a shift toward greener transport modes such as rail, inland waterways, and short-sea shipping.
