Summary

The aim of the program is to increase the attractiveness of cycling through greater traffic safety and better road conditions in both urban and rural areas. This is done, for example, by creating nationwide, separate and safe bicycle traffic networks, by expanding the bicycle traffic infrastructure, especially for cargo bikes, or by using safe and modern parking facilities.

Under the special programme for urban and rural areas, the Federal Government provides funding to the Länder and local authorities for the expansion of a safe and comprehensive bike lane network. The special programme for urban and rural areas will be expanded to include two new priority areas: (a) “Vision Zero” – upgrading and renovation of cycling infrastructure and (b) bicycle and pedelec parking spaces with charging infrastructure at public transport nodes (bus and train).

The programme will focus on:
  • New construction, conversion and expansion of comprehensive, separate and safer bicycle traffic networks
  • separate bike lanes
  • bicycle streets
  • Cycle path bridges or underpasses
  • Parking facilities and bicycle parking garages
  • cargo bike traffic
