Summary

Given the negative consequences of desertification and land degradation, this strategy aims to prevent and mitigate these processes by applying integrated measures aimed at long-term resource management. These measures will contribute to achieving land degradation and desertification neutrality by meeting the objectives and targets set by the 2030 Agenda to which Romania has committed itself to implement at national level.

It includes the target to by 2030, combat desertification, land restoration and degraded land and soils, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods; and strive to achieve a land degradation neutral world, but also other interlinked objectives.

The implementation period of the National Strategy on Preventing and Combating Desertification and Land Degradation is 2021-2030.

Specific objectives that will underpin the achievement of the overall objective to be met through the Strategy are the following:

2. Analysis of the progress made at national level in the field of combatingdesertification

3. Identification and assessment of the projected environmental effects of the Strategy based on two scenarios: in the absence of the Strategy and by meeting the recommendations.

4. Establishment of measures to prevent, reduce, compensate and monitor effects of desertification on the environment according to the three scenarios.

5. Provide technical assistance/advice to the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests on desertification until the completion of the contracted works.

6. Informing the public about desertification by organising debates and public consultations on the National Strategy on Prevention and Control of Desertification.
