Regulation (EU) 2024/1257 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 April 2024 on type-approval of motor vehicles and engines and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles, with respect to their emissions and battery durability (Euro 7)

This Communication from the European Commission to the other European Institutions provides an initial roadmap of key policies and strategies required to achieve the European Union's "new growth strategy", centred on the concept of the European Green Deal. It aims at enhancing the union's climate targets and sets four core goals: 1) climate-neutrality by 2050, 2) protection of human life, animals and plants by cutting pollution, 3) helping companies become world leaders in clean products and technologies, and 4) help ensure a just and inclusive transition. These goals should be reached by developing a circular economy, decarbonising the energy sector, renovate buildings, support the industry to innovate, and green private and public transport systems.

This regulation also known as Euro 7 amends Regulation (EU) 2018/858 to include new rules on penalties and types of infringements (Article 19). It repeals Regulations (EC) No 715/2007 and (EC) No 595/2009, effective from 1 July 2030 and 1 July 2031, respectively (Article 20). Additionally, it repeals Commission Regulation (EU) No 582/2011, Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1151, Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/2400, and Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/1362 are also repealed, effective from 1 July 2030 or 1 July 2031 (Article 20).&nbsp;
The main aim of the Regulation is to establish “common technical requirements and administrative provisions for the emission type-approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles, systems, components and separate technical units, with regard to their CO2 and pollutant emissions, fuel and electric energy consumption and battery durability.”
Some of the key provisions of the Regulation are:
Article 1 establishes the technical requirements and administrative provisions for emission type approval and battery durability.
Article 2 defines the scope, covering various categories of motor vehicles and trailers.
Article 6 outlines the durability requirements for vehicles, systems, components, and separate technical units.&nbsp;
Article 15 empowers the Commission to adopt delegated acts to amend the regulation based on technical progress.
