On December 20th, 2023, Ireland approved the Climate Action Plan 2024 (CAP24), the third annual update to Ireland's Climate Action Plan. CAP24 along with Ireland's Long-term Climate Strategy, sets out the strategic direction for meeting the country's climate targets, specifically a 51% reduction emissions from 2021 to 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions no later than 2050, and aligns with the economy-wide carbon budgets and sectoral ceilings that were agreed upon by the Government in July 2022.
CAP24 outlines the measures taken as part of Ireland "stock-taking" process of progress towards the achievement of the country's climate targets and elaborates on potential corrective actions to ensure that sectors stay within their respective sectoral emissions ceilings.
While CAP24 has been approved by the government, the plan is currently undergoing a public consultation which may entail adjustments to the plan based on feedback received from the public.
