The guidelines were developed by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in terms of section 6(1) (c) of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Act [Chapter 22:15] aimed at strengthening the resilience of the country’s banking system to climate-related risks and support the transition to a low-carbon economy. They guide all institutions registered and supervised by the Reserve Bank in terms of the Banking Act [Chapter 24:20], the Building Societies Act [Chapter 24:02], and the Microfinance Act [Chapter 24:30] on the adoption of climate risk management principles to assess, monitor, and mitigate climate-related financial risks, including credit, market, liquidity, and operational risks.
