The Energy Policy and Strategy 2024–2029 outlines a series of innovative initiatives, bold targets, and strategic investments that will propel Maldives towards a more sustainable future. By harnessing renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and ocean energies, Maldives will reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, lower its greenhouse gas emissions, and create a more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure. This document serves as guidance for stakeholders across government, industry, and civil society to collaborate in driving the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
Key objectives of the Maldives Energy Policy include:
- Diversifying the energy mix: Promoting the development and utilization of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, biomass and ocean energies, to reduce the country's dependence on imported fossil fuels and enhance energy security;
- Improving energy efficiency: Implementing measures to enhance energy efficiency across all sectors to reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions;
- Enhancing access to energy services: Ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services for all citizens;
- Strengthening energy governance: Enhancing institutional capacity, regulatory frameworks, and governance structures to facilitate the effective implementation of energy policies and programs; and
- Promoting public awareness and engagement: Raising awareness about the importance of sustainable energy practices and promoting community participation in energy conservation and renewable energy initiatives.
The policies are:
- Policy 1: Increase the Share of Renewable Energy in the National Energy Mix;
- Policy 2: Promote Energy Efficiency and Conservation;
- Policy 3: Improve Energy Security and Affordability;
- Policy 4: Strengthen Institutional Capacity and Regulatory Framework of the Energy Sector; and
- Policy 5: Promote Energy Research and Development.
