The purpose of this law is to strengthen education on environmental sustainability, climate change, and disaster risk management for children, adolescents, youth, and adults throughout their educational journey. It also aims to provide training for publicly elected officials and induction and re-induction for public servants in Colombia in these areas of knowledge. It recognises the principle of institutional and university autonomy, educational institutions at the preschool, basic, secondary, and higher education levels may incorporate the development of skills, attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to environmental sustainability, climate change, and disaster risk management into their teaching processes, in accordance with their specific context.
