Law No. 18.597 on the Efficient Use of Energy in the National Territory last amended by Law 19.924/2020

Declares the efficient use of energy to be in the national interest, lays down rules for its promotion and regulation. Has references to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.Law 19924/2020 amended the legislation assigning to the Uruguayan Trust for Energy Savings and Efficiency (FUDAEE) specific responsibilities, including administering Energy Efficiency Certificates, financing energy efficiency projects, research, and development, as well as promoting renewable energy. FUDAEE also funds energy diagnostics, cultural campaigns, regulatory activities, and laboratory upgrades for energy efficiency. Additionally, FUDAEE manages donations, covers operational costs, and maintains a contingency fund to address energy supply crises and ensure continuous energy supply.
