This law creates the framework for the application of Directive 2009/28 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of energy from renewable sources. The law mandates a new centralised specialist body to develop a national plan to achieve renewable energy targets drawn from the Directive, as well as making provision for a number of other bodies to play a role in monitoring and regulating compliance with the law and laying down the basic political objectives and regulatory support mechanisms for the deployment of renewable energy resources. The law was amended by Law 34/2018, to update terminology and alter administrative details.
