Maritime Agenda 2025

2017MitigationPolicyAgenda
Sectors: Transport

The Maritime Agenda 2025 sets out goals, fields of action, and measures to contribute to the sustainable use and protection of the sea and strengthen Germany’s competitiveness as a technology, production, and logistics location in the mid- to long-term. The agenda also incorporates climate considerations.

For instance, field of action no. 4 seeks to make shipping more sustainable and strengthen the protection of the climate and the environment. To this end, the federal government plans to continue to actively participate in the development of relevant climate and environment-related regulations; to support the introduction of new fuels and propulsion systems that reduce GHG emissions; to examine existing ships with a view to retrofitting them; to support the implementation of the global data collection system for the fuel consumption of ships by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and to support the corresponding adaptation of the EU MRV system; and lastly, to advance the establishment of a long-term CO2 reduction target for shipping at the IMO.
