The National Forest Policy follows the goal that Vanuatu's forest resources are managed in an integrated and sustainable manner and provide wood and non-wood forest products as well as environmental and social services to contribute profitably to income generation, employment opportunities, and social well-being for all people in Vanuatu, and thus to sustainable economic growth.
The combined impacts of climate change, population growth and soil fertility declines will exert a growing and cumulative pressure on the remaining lowland forests of Vanuatu to be converted to agricultural land. The forest policy addresses some of the steps required to deal with these conflicting demands on land. One of the guiding principles states that the implementation of the National Forest Policy facilitates the role of the forest sector in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Furthermore, one of the policy directives directly concerns climate change. This policy directive includes the following specific objectives:
