On 16th July 2019, the Council of Ministers adopted the 2030 National Environmental Policy (PEP2030). PEP2030 became the most important strategic document in the area of the environment and water management. The role of PEP2030 is to ensure Poland's ecological safety and high quality of life for all residents. In the system of strategic documents it specifies the mid-term Strategy for Responsible Development to 2020 with a perspective to 2030.
PEP2030 will be the basis for investing European funds from the financial perspective 2021-2027. PEP2030 also supports the implementation of Poland's objectives and commitments at the international level, including those of the EU and the UN, especially in the context of the EU's climate and energy policy objectives to 2030 and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) included in Agenda 2030.
Detailed objectives will be implemented through the following lines of intervention:
- sustainable water management, including ensuring access to clean water for society and the economy and achieving good water status,
- elimination of sources of air pollution emissions or significant reduction of their impact,
- protection of the earth's surface, including soil,
- counteracting environmental threats and ensuring biological, nuclear and radiological safety,
- management of natural and cultural heritage resources, including protection and improvement of biodiversity and landscape,
- supporting multifunctional and permanently sustainable forest management,
- waste management towards a circular economy,
- management of geological resources by developing and implementing the state's raw materials policy,
- supporting the implementation of eco-innovations and disseminating the best available BAT techniques (they involve determining emission limits for larger industrial plants),
- combating climate change,
- adaptation to climate change and disaster risk management,
- ecological education, including shaping sustainable consumption patterns,
- improving the environmental protection control and management system and improving the financing system.
