The Biofuels Law establishes a national framework to regulate and promote the sustainable development of biofuels in Mexico, explicitly positioning them as a component of the country’s energy transition and diversification strategy. Its primary objective is to enhance energy sovereignty, justice, and self-sufficiency through biofuel deployment, while directly contributing to climate change mitigation by targeting reductions in atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. To ensure alignment with national energy transition goals, the law stipulates a formal review and update process for its instruments and programmes every three years, or sooner if justified by new data or adjustments required by the Energy Transition National Strategy (Estrategia Nacional de Transición Energética).
