Canada's hydrogen strategy

2020PolicyMitigation
Sectors: Energy, Social development
This document, subtitled "Seizing the Opportunities for Hydrogen - A Call to Action", sets the government's vision to increase the production and use of hydrogen in the country. It was developed with a range of non-state stakeholders. It seeks to modernise the country's energy systems through building new hydrogen supply and distribution infrastructure and fostering uptake in various end-uses in order to achieve short- and long-term decarbonisation. The strategy further seeks to make Canada a net exporter of H2.

Over the next five years, Canada aims to:
  • Encourage early deployment HUBs in mature applications, and Canadian demonstrations in emerging applications;
  • employ regulations, including the forth-coming Clean Fuel Standard to drive near-term investments; and
  •  frame new policy and regulatory measures needed to reach net-zero by 2050.
Examples:
Resilient infrastructure, Fossil fuel divestment, Net zero growth plan, Sustainable fishing
