The Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) is a strategic framework for improving England’s natural environment up to 2043, containing interim targets for the statutory Environment Act 2021 targets. It sets out how the government will work alongside individuals, communities and businesses to achieve England's nature ambitions in the context of nature depletion.
The EIP contains 10 goals on: the restoration of nature; the improvement of environmental quality through goals on air, water, chemicals and pesticides; driving forward a circular economy through goals on waste and resources; the achievement of environmental security through goals on climate, hazards and biosecurity; and increase to access to nature.
There is a focus on actions and investment to:
- enhance the quantity and state of our critical natural capital assets;
- capture more of the benefits from natural assets; and
- reduce the pressures on our natural capital assets from direct use and respond to external threats.
