Law no. 2011-835 aimed at prohibiting the exploration and exploitation of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon mines by hydraulic fracturing

This law banned the use of hydraulic fracturing for the exploration and exploitation of shale gas and oil.

The ban on fracking was later codified under Article L. 111-13 of the Mining Code.

France's restrictions on oil and gas exploration and exploitation were further expanded through Law no. 2017-1839.
