The National Plan for Disaster Management (NPDM) 2016-2020 was prepared under the leadership of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR). The plan focusses on emerging risks linked to urbanization and climate change, and the necessity of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for sustainable development.

The NPDM 2016-2020 establishes the following goals: 1) to promote policy coherence among disaster management and development, 2) to make DRR a development practice to achieve resilient public investment; 3) to build capacity and leadership to implement the NPDM at national and local level; 3) to promote knowledge and information from the scientific and academic community, etc.

The plan provides two main implementation guides: 1) a broad policy direction in terms of national level action plans to guide DM in Bangladesh; 2) action plans with indicative time frames over the next 5 years and 34 core targets to be continued until 2030.
