In 2019 the Department of Environment and Natural Resources established an Enhanced National Greening Program. The primary objectives are the rehabilitation of 1.2 million hectares of denuded forest lands and the preservation of existing forests. The programme gives effect to Executive Orders No. 23 and 26 of 2011, which aim to address climate change, ensure the sustainable management of natural resources, and reduce poverty through forest management practices. In November 2015, Executive Order No. 193 was signed which expanded the existing National Greening Program, with the aim of rehabilitating all the remaining unproductive, denuded and degraded forestlands estimated at 7.1 million hectares from 2016 to 2028.
