Summary

The Directive aims to promote the repair of goods to improve the internal market’s functioning, enhance consumer protection, and support sustainable consumption. Its main goal is to extend the life of products, prevent premature disposal, and make repair more accessible and attractive for consumers to contribute to sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It applies to goods with defects outside the seller’s liability under Directive (EU) 2019/771, and it is without prejudice to the rules of proportionality assessments set by Directive (EU) 2018/958. The measures set by the Directive support a more circular economy through repair and reuse, aligning it to the climate neutrality goals set in the European Green Deal. Member States must incorporate this directive into national law by July 31, 2026.
