Summary

Brazil’s Sectoral Plan for Solid Waste and Domestic Wastewater aims to reduce methane and other greenhouse gas emissions by expanding recycling, organic waste treatment, biogas recovery, wastewater treatment, and circular economy practices while phasing out inadequate waste disposal systems. The goals for the plan are:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from solid waste management and domestic wastewater treatment systems;

  • Eliminate inadequate waste disposal practices and support the closure and recovery of open dumpsites.

  • Increase diversion of organic waste from landfills through composting, biodigestion, recycling, and waste valorization.

  • Expand selective waste collection and improve resource recovery and circular economy practices.

  • Maximize methane capture and energy recovery from landfills and wastewater treatment facilities.
