Brazil’s Thematic Plan for Ocean and Coastal Zones aims to increase the resilience of coastal communities, marine ecosystems, and ocean-based economic activities by addressing climate risks such as sea-level rise, coastal erosion, ocean warming, and extreme weather events through integrated adaptation and ecosystem-based management. The main goals are:
- Strengthen the adaptive capacity of coastal and marine systems to climate change impacts.
- Support the resilience of coastal populations and ocean-dependent economic sectors through sustainable and climate-informed adaptation measures.
- Reduce vulnerabilities associated with sea-level rise, coastal erosion, flooding, ocean warming, acidification, and extreme events.
- Integrate climate adaptation into coastal and marine planning, governance, and territorial management.
- Protect, conserve, and restore coastal and marine ecosystems that provide climate resilience and ecosystem services.
